Bosox clobber 222 bombs in Don George’s 1979 replay

And like that, Don George is on to his next replay. He just finished his replay of the 1979 Boston Red Sox who really liked to hit home runs. Aside from that, the replay stats were very similar to the actual numbers.

Here’s Don’s recap:

“Just completed the 1979 Boston Red Sox single team season replay.

In the replay, the Sox matched their actual record exactly, although it took 102 games to match their trend.

The Sox belted 222 home runs in the replay, just two short of the 1961 Yankees replay, but matched the ’61 Yanks 25.5 AB/HR.

The Sox key sluggers were tremendous and as a team batted .300 in the replay versus .283 actual.  Sox pitching was very close to form.”

The Red Sox ended up with the win total for Don as they did in real life.

Read Don’s excellent writeup here. I was reminded how good of starter Dennis Eckersley was (in real life and APBA) before we went to the bullpen.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

3 Comments:

  1. Where are those cards from?

  2. As someone currently playing 1979 those cards are nowhere near what APBA assigned them. I am also curious where they came from.

    • For the replays, I purchase all cards from APBA and prefer the most up-to-date reprint. The 1979 cards used were dated 2014. I produce summaries for all the replays and simply type the numbers into excel as it’s easier to document rather than using photos. I love revisiting the replay stats and comparing the replay stats to the actual stats and cards.
