Don George’s ’54 Giants make it to the Series

Reader Don George continues his single season replay fun. This time, he skippered the 1954 New York Giants against the rest of the National League.

Mays didn’t disappoint. He hit .356, eleven points above his actual average and bullseyed his 41 actual homeruns for the season (see Willie’s card featured for Monster Card Monday back in 2013). As Don says, “Willie Mays proved his MVP worthiness”.

In the replay, Don Mueller hit .326 which was slightly lower than his real-life .342 mark. Johnny Antonelli (an AX) racked up 24 wins behind a 2.30 ERA. In fact, four Giant hurlers had ERAs under 3.00 including reliever Hoyt Wilhelm’s 2.10 mark in 111 innings.

This all added up to a 99-win season for Don’s New York Giants which eclipsed the actual Giant record by two wins.

Don includes a wrap-up of the Giants-Indians World Series. I won’t spoil it for you… you can read about it here in Don’s very well documented season recap.

thanks Don!

One Comment:

  1. Great writeup. Loved the feature about Dusty Rhodes and his 8-RBI game.
