Mel M. shares mid-year update of ’67 AL replay

Tony_Oliva_1963Reader Mel M sends us a detailed update of his APBA Master Game replay of the 1967 American League.  Right now, Mel has played up to June 4.

Despite the efforts of batting leader Tony Oliva (right) and homerun leader Harmon Killebrew, both of the Twins, it’s the Red Sox who are currently claiming first place with a 31-19 record.  Jim Lonborg may have something to do with that with his 1.40 ERA and a league leading 9 wins.

It’s been a good replay so far.  The AL race is tightening up.  There hasn’t been to much hitting average wise, but the power hitters are doing well.  I’m using a fielding chart from an APBA Journal (issue #5 (July 10), 1994).  I’m using my own chart for bases empty fielding.

Fielding one column for a 2b-9 and SS-9-10 is an out.  Fielding column two- if a 5 or 6 is rolled it’s an error.  Fielding column  three-error.

For 2b-8 and SS-8 column one-out, fielding two-roll a 5 or 6- out, column three- error.  For 2b-7 and SS-7 fielding one-out, fielding two, roll a  3-4-5-6, error, fielding three-error.

For the outfielders, bases empty.  OF-1 dice roll 11-16-fielding one, 21-56 fielding two, 61-66= 3.  OF-2 11-46 (F-1) 51-63 (F-2) 64-66(F-3)
OF-3 11-63 (F-1) 64-65 (F-2) 66(F-3).

It’s the first adjustments I’ve ever made playing the game,  when Cap Peterson made 6 errors in right field in April, I made the changes.  I got a lot of good ideas from Tom’s APBA Blog, and from APBA outside the lines on Delphi forum.
I’ve been playing since 1968.  I’ve only completed one season, the 1964 reprint, it took 17 years to finish.  I enjoyed every game, it was a great replay.

thanks for the update, Mel!  I’d like to hear how well the fielding chart has helped down the road.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

3 Comments:

  1. Second baseman 8 and shortstop 8 should read, fielding column two-roll 4, 5 or 6 error.

  2. Good luck, Mel. This was the year I fell in love with baseball, one of the great pennant races of all time. The Sox were a middling team until they won 10 in a row in the summer. All went down to the last day.

    • Thanks Tom. The 60’s are my favorite era too. Although living in Pittsburgh, the 70’s were awesome also. The red sox started off slowly (poor hitting) but have been red hot the last 2 1/2 weeks.
