I just got an email from Mel M (the one and same who suggested the latest Monster Card Monday). He tells us about a highlight during a ‘72 ‘replay’ he did. Replay is in quotes because it is in reality, not technically a replay.
Mel explains:
“Apba is selling the RR of ’72 baseball. I bought the 1st reprint in ’91. The 1st week of that season’s schedule was never played because of a work stoppage. So I played that portion of the schedule. The Mets opened at the Pirates. Agee hit a solo shot with 2 out in the 1st, and that was all Seaver needed. Tom terrific walked lead off man Cash who was thrown out on a botched hit and run play, and Clemente walked in the 4th. Seaver fires an opening day no-hitter. 9-0-0-0-7-2 (1-0) 0.00 Agee 3hits 2rbi(3-0) Mel M”
First, kudos on the great idea for the replay. APBA as a replay tool not only allows us to simulate what already happened but also what could never be or in our mind, “what SHOULD have happened”.
Seaver was always the perennial opening day pitcher if my memory serves.
On a different topic, I just want to point people to Smed’s Baseball Card Blog. I just ran across it the other day and enjoy browsing the cards and the author’s running commentary. The posts are categorized by year so you can find cards from your particular favorite era. I’m a child of the 70s and am finding cards I owned as a kid (back then they came with bubble gum). I found this Dave Pagan entry particular fun. His comments on the card were spot on, too.
A very convincing argument can be made that Tom Seaver is the greatest pitcher any of us has ever seen.
Mine is Nolan Ryan or Sandy Koufax, but Tom Terrific is certainly in the Top Five.
Hiya Don!
He’s certainly in the discussion…
Tom Terrific….He was something. .
Best regards,
Jim
