So who won Mike Bunch’s 1963 World Series anyway?

Billy_O'Dell_1963A couple weeks ago you all helped Mike Bunch in selecting the MVP and Cy Young award winners for his 1963 replay.  Here are the NL leaderboards and here are the AL leaderboards for the replay.  I’m still waiting to hear back from Mike on who actually received the hardware.

Of course, you can replay a whole season without replaying the World Series.  Mike’s series didn’t involve either of the two actual champions, the Yankees or the Dodgers.  Rather his replay included the Giants and the Twins two powerhouses in their own right.

Here’s Mike’s 1963 World Series summary:

Game # 1

Giants At Twins: Juan Marichal 27-8 (A YZ) versus Camili Pascual 20-7(A XZ). This looked to be a pitching dual between the top Cy Young candidates in each league. It was clear early that wasn’t going to happen. In the top of the 1st a one out error by Harmon Killebrew put a runner in scoring position, After a ground out to short Willie Mays put one over the centerfield fence for an early two run lead.

The Giants added to that with two more runs in the top of the third with a leadoff single by Felipe Alou and a two run homer by Cha-cha Cepeda. The Giants now lead 4-0. But here came the Twins, a lead-off double by Allen was followed by a single off the bat of Camili Pascual that made it 1st & 3rd nobody out. A sac fly by Rollins got the Twins on the board. That was followed by a two run homer off the bat of Don Mincher. Now it was 4-3 Giants. The Giants got two back in the 4th on a two run homer by Harvey Kuenn. Now it is 6-3 Giants. The Twins came back in their half of the 4th with a run on a double by Bob Allison and a triple by Earl Battey. Giants 6, Twins 4. The giants scored again in the 6th on a pinch hit single by Peterson an RBI double by Jim Davenport (he came in defensively for Kuenn) and a run scoring single by Felipe Alou. Giants now lead 8-4.

The Twins got 1 run back in the bottom of the 6th on an Allison double and a Versalles single. After 6 innings it’s Giants 8 Twins 5. The Giants failed to score in their 7th but the Twins got to more back on a Mincher single and a Killebrew Homer. After 7 innings Giants 8 Twins 7. That’s the way the game ended as both teams put up zeros in the 8th & 9th innings. Giants lead the series 1-0.

Game # 2

Giants at Twins: Jack Sanford 19-17 (C YZ) versus Dick Stigman 19-6 (B X). After all the scoring in game # 1 I wasn’t sure what to expect in this game. Stigman worked around a one out double by Alou to hold the Giants scoreless. The Twins lead off the bottom of the 1st with back to back doubles by Rollins and Versalles. In the second the Twins added two more runs on walk a single by Stigman a sacrifice fly by Rollins and a triple by Versalles. The Twins now lead 3-0. In the bottom of the 3rd the Twins scored two more runs on a single by Allison, a triple by Battey and a single by Mincher. Twins now lead 5-0. That was all the scoring in the game. You see that one out double by Alou in the first inning was the only hit by the Giants!! Yes Dick Stigman threw a one hit Shutout.

Game # 3

Twins at Giants: Lee Stange 12-7 (C YZ) versus Billy O’Dell 16-9 (B Z) After a day off to travel to San Francisco it was game three. The Twins scored in the first on Vic Power’s solo Home Run. This was Power’s first start of the series. Billy shut down the twins for the next seven innings before leaving for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th. The problem was Lee Stange didn’t allow any runs for the whole game. Yes, another Shutout by the Twins. This one was also a One-hitter. Lee gave up a two out single to Harvey Kuenn in the third inning for the only hit the Giants could muster. Twins lead the series 2-1.

Game # 4

Twins at Giants: Jim Kaat 12-7 (D YZ) versus Juan Marichal 27-8 (A YZ). The Giants bring Marichal back on three days rest while the Twins counter with Jim Kaat. Marichal was back to form as he didn’t allow his first base runner until the 3rd inning, a one-out single by Allen. But the Giants got a leadoff Home run from Harvey Kuenn in the bottom of the 1st. McCovey followed that with a double and scored on a single by Mays. The Giants added two more in the 5th inning on a one out single by Mays and a two run homer by Cepeda. A solo shot by Mays in the 7th ended the scoring. Juan Marichal ended up with a two hit shutout. Series tied at 2-2.

Game # 5

Twins at Giants: Camili Pascual 20-7 (A XZ) versus Jack Sanford 19-17 (C YZ). The Giants scored fist with a lead-off homer from Harvey Kuenn. The Giants added runs in the 2nd on a lead-off triple from Alou and a sacrifice fly from Pagan and again in the 4th on a double by Alou and a sacrifice fly by Davenport. Giants up 3-0. The Twins got one back in the 5th on a double by Allison and a sacrifice fly from Versalles. A solo homer by Allison in the 7th got the Twins back to within one. But the Giants put the game away with three in the 8th. A single by McCovey. A two run homer by Mays and a solo home by Alou. Final Giants 6 Twins 2.

Game # 6

Giants at Twins: Billy O’Dell 16-9 (B Z) versus Dick Stigman 19-6 (B X). With the series moving back to Minneapolis could Dick Stigman repeat the one hitter he had in Game # 2? Could the Twins push the series to a game six? All of these questions were answered in the top of the first inning. Harvey Kuenn lead off with a walk. Willie McCovey was hit by a pitch. This seemed to ignite the Giants. Willie Mays hit a slow roller to third that Rollins field for the out but the runners moved up to 2nd & 3rd with only one out. Stigman regained his composure by striking out Orlando Cepeda, but after fouling of many pitches Alou worked Stigman for a walk. The loaded the bases with two outs bringing up Ed Bailey. Mr. Bailey delivered a monster shot over the center field fence for a Grand Slam!! This really put the Twins in a hole. Johnny Goryl proceeded to boot a grounder for an error, Pagan walked and Billy O’Dell got an RBI single before Stigman retired Kuenn on a fly out. The Giants now lead the series 3-2 and game #6 5-0. It stayed that way until the 8th when Ed Bailey hit a solo homer.  By the way, Billy O’Dell threw a two-hit shutout. Giants 6 Twins 0.

Giants win the series 4-2
