Tully Sparks’ is perfect in Scott Fennessy’s 1905 replay…

…for one game at least.

tully Sparks perfect game

I just got an email Steve Fennessy who does the fantastic updates on his 1905 Cubs replay here on The APBA Blog.  He gave me heads up on an exciting pitchers’ duel between Tully Sparks and Irv Young.

…In other news Tully Sparks and Irv Young meet up in what may have been the greatest pitching duel I have ever had.  Irv Young allows 1 run on 3 hits and LOSES.  Tully Sparks line was just a "little" bit better as he strikes out 5 on his way to my first perfect game.  See attached scoresheet.

Here’s a pdf of Scott’s scoresheet from Sparks’ perfie.

Scott also notes that the Giants are making ground on the Cubs.  It’s definitely a close race and it’s not helping that Ed Reulbach has been injured and will out for 13 games.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. Great one Scott, Easter eggs instead of goose eggs.

    • Hi Mel,

Oddly enough while I realized about the 4th that I had a no hitter going I did not even notice until I started updating the stats after the game that is was a pefecto.

I had come close 2-3 timees in my 1901 replay with Jesse Tannehill 2 times for the Pirates and Cy Young for the Red Sox. Both got to 7.2 mark before losing them.

I cannot believe Irv Young gets hosed over again. He was on the losing end of some close games earlier, but pitch a three hitter and lose? that’s going to be hard to top.

  2. That is great Scott.
I have been playing APBA since 1979 and I have had many no-hitters, but NEVER had a perfect game.
I came the closest that I came was in my latest replay. Lefty Grove retired the 1st 26 1935 Chicago Cubs when Fred Lindstrom, pinch hitting for Leon Warneke, hit a double, it was a 32 roll and then the small white die rolled off of the fielding boards and went from a 32 to a 33…UGH!

    Congrats on the Perfecto!!!!!!

    • Hi Pastor Rich.

That’s a tough one to deal with. I refer to those normally as “cheap singles” but I don’t think I could deal with that on a perfect game.

I did have that happen when I did my 01 replay when someone (cannot remember the player) hit a 66, followed by another 66 that rolled off the table for a foul ball.

He only had one zero on his two column card and only the one 1, so needless to say I was pretty unhappy. That would turn out to be the closest he came to a homer that year.
