2022 Old Dominion tourney: It’s Tim Rounds (yes, again!)

Jim Saska sends a recap of the 2022 Old Dominion tournament which took place last Saturday in Richmond, Virginia. And would you believe the same Tim Rounds who won the championship of the Linda B. Schulz Memorial APBA Baseball Tournament earlier this month also won Old Dominion’s tourney?

As Jim says, “Tim Rounds is on a roll”. Indeed.

Jim writes:

On a beautiful autumn Saturday in Hopewell, Virginia, the Old Dominion tournament took place with twenty-three participants from five different states., including 2 APBA HOF’ers  This was the largest number of participants in the history of the Old Dominion tournament since it began in 2015.

Division winners

  • Mike Visaggio- 1982 Yankees, Granny Hamner Division (6-2)
  • Jack Dolan- 2017 Texas Rangers, Ray Dandridge Division (5-3)
  • Tim Rounds- 1912 Napoleons, Johnny Oates Division (7-3)
  • Mitch Tolson- 1967 Braves, Johnny Grubb Division (9-1)

In the end, Tim Rounds, fresh off his hard-won victory in the Slippery Rock tournament, won his second consecutive APBA tournament by defeating Mitch Tolson’s 1967 Atlanta Braves squad in the Championship series 2 games to none.  The second game was very close, the Naps winning it on a sacrifice squeeze play in the ninth to score the winning run.

To get to the Championship series, Mitch’s Braves defeated Jack Dolan’s 2017 Texas Rangers 8-5, and Tim’s Naps downed Mike Visaggio’s ’82 Yankees team 3-1.  This marks Tim’s third Old Dominion Championship, having won it previously in 2017 and 2019 as well.

We are looking to do this again in 2023; date to be announced

Thanks to Jim for the recap! I love seeing this tournament growing like it it. By the way, Jim is an old friend. He organized the first couple of Chicagoland tournaments I attended before he relocated to Richmond and started up Old Dominion.

As for Tim Rounds, I am impressed! Two tournaments in one month! Congratulations!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. Thank you Tom. Yes, I wore the same shirt, on purpose. Both tournaments were like marathons composed of 90 foot sprints. I was very tired. The competition was really tough. There were lots of managers there, not just rollers.

  2. Tim is a true student of baseball and a dedicated APBA player. It is no surprise that he is winning tournaments. He’s a tough competitor and deserving champion.
