John Roels pilots 1937 Yanks to victory at GMABT

I want to say congratulations and well done!

John Roels and Chris Baier

Congratulations to John Roels who won the Greater Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament championship last weekend.  He took the 1937 New York Yankees and defeated a host of worthy teams.  That included Chris Baier’s 2006 Tigers in the final game.  Nice going, John!

And well done, Pastor Rich Zawadzki!  From the photos I’ve seen and the video above, it looks like every one had a blast at GMABT!  You really know how to plan a tournament.  The comments I’ve been reading since last weekend made me wish I had gone.

Now I hear you are already planning next year’s event.

By the way, thanks for great video by Ron Emch.  It’s a great one for the archives!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I had a great time despite going 2-4 with my 2011 Tigers. In one game, I lost my starting SS and LF (Jhony Peralta and Delmon Young) for the game on a collision, and then my C (Alex Avila) in the 3rd sliding into 2B. I had all 3 of my bench players in (Don Kelly at C, a C5) by the 3rd inning. And yet, that was one of the games I won! That’s baseball.

  2. Rich did a great job. It was a wonderful tournament and my fellow Grand Rapids APBA’er John Roels took home the trophy! Priceless.
