Does APBA’s product schedule reveal future strategy?

Hey APBA Fans,

In case you missed it on the APBA Games Company website, this schedule announcement was posted recently…

2018 Baseball Season Product schedule

November 30, 2018, the 2018 Season file will be available at APBA GO,

January 14, 2019, start taking orders and shipping 2018 Baseball Card sets, and

January 21, 2019 start taking orders and delivering the 2018 BBW files or CD.

The good news?  It will just over a month before we can play APBA Baseball with the 2018 baseball season.  The not-so-good news for cards and dice players is that they will have to wait till January to put their 2018 season set order in with the Company.

I’ll have to admit, it’s a good marketing strategy for the Company who have pushing APBA GO.  Those fans (even ones who play the cards and dice version) who are desperate for a peek at the cards may end up ordering the 2018 APBA GO season.  It will work with me.  Even though, I’m primarily a Basic Game player, I’ll probably place an order for the season once it comes available.

To be honest, I haven’t played much of APBA GO as I haven’t seen a need to replace my cards and dice APBA habit.  I’ve loved the board game since I was a kid and I don’t think that will change.  I suspect similar fans of the game feel the same.

I’m curious about the inclination of those who primarily play APBA Baseball for the computer (aka APBA BBW).  I know there are plenty of you out there.  I don’t think it is sustainable for the Company to develop and support two separate computer games and correlating seasons (even BBW files won’t be delivered till January 2019).

Have you tried the game? Has there been any trend to moving to APBA GO as a replacement for BBW?

Thomas Nelshoppen

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

4 Comments:

  1. I play BBW mostly, along with some basic game. I have tried APBA Go and don’t know why anyone would want to switch to it from BBW.

  2. I’m not the season replayer that many dedicated APBA players are. Nowadays, I’m probably what you could call a tournament player. I play in as many regional tournaments that I can make.

For me, APBA Go allows me to participate in tournaments in between the physical ones. There is a
GO player who does many GO tournaments. I’ve participates in a few of them and they are a blast. You can usually play your game from setup to finish in less than 30 minutes. That hits my sweet spot.

GO doesn’t have to replace what you do now. It can supplement what you do now.

If you look at it that way, maybe more folks would be open to playing it.

  3. Hi Tom,

You know my beliefs as well. Personally while I have never tried the GO version yet, would rather purchase the cards and supplement them with windows for seasons that I want to “breeze” through when my favorite team isn’t very strong.

However, now that I have said that, I would not be surprised to see APBA push BBW to the back burner, and while they may not discontinue it, I think they will just leave it as is and use their future development assets to improve/change GO.
