Flashback Friday: IAL newsletter from 1981

Back in days before Facebook, the web and even email, our Illowa APBA League made do with newsletters delivered by postal mail.  Instead of instant access to information, we waited till the end of month when the big envelope came in the mail.

This particular newsletter put together by former IAL president Tedd Mallasch came out after the 1981 season of the IAL.

Yes youngsters, we TYPED our stats! On an old fashioned typewriter.

If you must know, I had the Geneseo A’s at the time (I inherited the Twin City Thunderchickens at a later time and couldn’t bear to change the awesome name).  We had a rough year to say the least.    Lance Parrish was our big slugger leading the league with 51 doubles.

Doug Corbett came home with a few IAL awards that winter.  He was named Cy Young, Rookie of the Year and Fireman of the Year.  He did NOT win Righthander of the Year though.  Corbett was a anomaly in IAL history and a feather in Manager Mike Bunch’s cap.  In 1981, Corbett went 22-5 and also saved 20 games.  He did that unprecedented feat with a 1.78 ERA.

I say unprecedented but skipper Mike was bound to make it happen again in 1982.  In ‘82, Corbett almost repeated his 20-20 feat again winning 22 and saving 19.

Wait, Tom Brookens hit .303?

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. Awesome stats. We’re there really six guys who didn’t strike out all year? Did anyone notice the Sutton/Carlton picture swap?

    Keep up the great work.

    • haha, no I never noticed the swap as much as I’ve looked at that! Good eye!

This back in our early days in our league and a couple managers didn’t keep strikeout totals for batters. Not sure why. We eventually put in our constitution which stats were required. :)
