This is the final segment in the “2013 APBA by the Numbers” series breaking down the ratings and numbers from the newly-released disk. Today, I’ll wrap up with some miscellaneous lists. It’ll be a fun mish-mash of anything that didn’t fit into the Pitching, the Fielding or the Hitting segments I did earlier.
I’ll start with Speed distribution. I broke down the numbers of those rated (F)ast and (S)low. Slow wins by a landslide primarily because of slow rated pitchers and designated hitters, I assume.
Speed Rating | Distribution |
F | 251 |
S | 545 |
Speaking of speed, here are the players who were rated slow base runners yet still managed to receive a 15-11.
Player | Speed Rating | Result # at 15 |
Corey Brown | (S) | 11 |
Eury Perez | (S) | 11 |
Jeff Kobernus | (S) | 11 |
On the opposite end of the spectrum, these players managed to steal the most bases without getting either a 10 or an 11 in the first column. Keep in mind, it’s possible they could get a 14*.
Player | Most steals with no first column 10 or 11 |
Brandon Barnes | 11 |
Chris Denorfia | 11 |
Still on the speed topic here, these are the pitchers who know how to run the base paths. They were rated (F)ast.
Pitchers rated (F)ast |
Chris Archer |
Esmil Rogers |
Tim Hudson |
Jeff Samardzija |
Edwin Jackson |
Aroldis Chapman |
Jason Marquis |
Jordan Zimmermann |
Jair Jurrjens |
J.C. Ramirez |
Cesar Jimenez |
Jose Contreras |
Sean O’Sullivan |
Eric Surkamp |
Heath Hembree |
Houston Astro Jake Elmore (pictured at top) wins the award for being the most versatile fielder. He played every position in 2013. Note he actually played every position including all outfield spots and this was done over the course of the whole season not in one game ala Jose Oquendo.
Fielding Rating at… | P | C | 1B | 2B | 3B | SS | OF |
Jake Elmore | 1 | 5 | 2 | 7 | 3 | 7 | 1 |
Elmore was joined by 14 other players who played the four infield positions (1B, 2B, SS, 3B).
Fielding Rating at… | 1B | 2B | 3B | SS |
Ryan Flaherty | 3 | 7 | 4 | 7 |
Jake Elmore | 2 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
Adam Rosales | 3 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
D.J. Lemahieu | 2 | 9 | 4 | 6 |
Michael Young | 3 | 6 | 3 | 6 |
Ed Lucas | 3 | 7 | 4 | 7 |
Yuniesky Betancourt | 3 | 7 | 3 | 6 |
Justin Turner | 2 | 7 | 4 | 7 |
Jordy Mercer | 2 | 7 | 3 | 8 |
Joaquin Arias | 3 | 7 | 4 | 8 |
Pedro Ciriaco | 2 | 7 | 3 | 8 |
Brendan Harris | 3 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
Nick Green | 3 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
Chris Valaika | 2 | 7 | 3 | 7 |
Brandon Inge | 3 | 7 | 5 | 6 |
Elmore shows up here too, of course. These were the players who went above and beyond and took the mound for their team. All were graded as a D pitcher. Skip Schumaker gets a MG grade of 2*. I assume it’s because he appeared in two games.
Non-pitchers who received a grade | Grade |
John McDonald | (1* P-1)(X) |
Ryan Raburn | (1* P-1)(X) |
Jake Elmore | (1* P-1) |
Jamey Carroll | (1* P-1) |
Sam Fuld | (1* P-1) |
David Murphy | (1* P-1)(X) |
Skip Schumaker | (2* P-1)(W) |
Anthony Recker | (1* P-1)(W) |
Alberto Gonzalez | (1* P-1) |
Casper Wells | (1* P-1)(W) |
Josh Harrison | (1* P-1) |
Rob Johnson | (1* P-1)(X) |
These were the J-4 players who batted the most. My guess it’s simply a case of low number of games but a high number of at-bats per game.
Player | Most At Bats for player with a J4 rating |
Ryan Braun | 225 |
Derek Dietrich | 215 |
Curtis Granderson | 214 |
Jonathan Villar | 210 |
Ruben Tejada | 208 |
Now for something really trivial… the players in the 2013 set with the longest names…
Longest Names | # of characters |
Jarrod Saltalamacchia | 20 |
Christian Bethancourt | 20 |
Francisco Rodriguez | 18 |
Yuniesky Betancourt | 18 |
Arquimedes Caminero | 18 |
…and shortest names.
Shortest Names | # of characters |
Jon Jay | 6 |
Sam Fuld | 7 |
Ed Lucas | 7 |
Ian Krol | 7 |
C.C. Lee | 7 |
Chaz Roe | 7 |
Pete Orr | 7 |
Other bits of trivia:
- there were 70 players with a J-0 rating.
- Oriole reliever Jim Johnson received a B*YZ grade despite leading the majors with 50 saves. He had a 2.94 ERA in 70 1/3 innings pitched.
- 32 players who played just one game in 2013 will receive a card.
Overall, the offensive rating of the cards seemed a bit tempered. While there were seven hitters who received five power numbers, there weren’t any players who warranted any crazy monster cards that we’ve seen in the past. There were some potential terrible cards (see Ramon Hernandez’ thirteen 24s on his limited card).
Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part (hitting is down on my Twin City Thunderchickens) but it will be a pitchers’ year no doubt.
If you haven’t already, check out the rest of the 2013 APBA by the Numbers series. Hope you’ve enjoyed this series!!
Four other players than Oquendo have also played every position in one game, Cesar Tovar (MIN 68′), Campaneris (A’s 65′), Scott Shelden (TEX 2000) & Shane Halter of the 2000 Tigers. I thought Inge & Don Kelly came close to that for a game, but I was wrong.
The other unique thing about Jake Elmore was his unusual A-7 steal rating. 7 attempts, 1 successful. You don’t see that rating much, if at all.
Rodney,
heh, I didn’t even notice the A-7 rating. Strange.
Tom
Keep up the good work Tom. I enjoy reading your blog and the comments!
