I did a Willie Mays card not too long ago but when Robert Hutchings posted this on Facebook a couple days ago, I couldn’t resist.
This is Mays’ 1957 reprint card and it is quite fun to look at. Mays hit .333 with 35 homeruns and 26 doubles but he also had 20 triples that year. He scored 112 runs and stole 38 bases. He led the league in slugging with a .626 mark for the 6th place Giants.
Split | G | PA | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1957 Totals | 152 | 669 | 585 | 112 | 195 | 26 | 20 | 35 | 97 | 38 | 77 | 62 | .333 | .408 | .626 |
I just keep looking at that 11-2. The 33-5 and 22-5 are pretty nice too. He has a 44-8 but keep in mind Mays’ 38 steals entitled him to a 15-11 and a 25-11.
With four 14s, one of them lands on 26. Sweet.
Fun numbers: 11-2, 22-5, 26-14
And of course, Mays is Fast and an OF-3.
thanks, Robert!
gotta love the 1-2 combo but adding a pair of 5s is wild even if earned. of all the players i wish i could have seen live this guy would have to be him. he musta been 100% adrenaline at the polo grounds.
i rem a ’79 brett card with the 1-2 combo but im betting it only had 2-6s and (i think) a single 11.
He was the greatest player I ever saw. The link is to Mays vs. Koufax.
