Monster Card Monday: 1974 Sadaharu Oh

This week’s card will be a bit different thanks to Steve Stein of Steve’s APBA Card Computer. It is not an official card but published by Compuduck Sports Software.

Steve sent me a copy of 1974 Sadaharu Oh from the Yomiuri Giants in the Nippon Pro Baseball Central League. Wowza! What a card!

Sadaharu Oh played 22 seasons for the Giants and to say he hit consistently would be an understatement. In a stretch of fifteen seasons, he hit over 40 homers in all but two.

The 1974 campaign was something special though. Oh slugged .761 behind a .333 batting average and 49 home runs. Walking 158 times, he only had 44 whiffs.

That gave Sadaharu Oh a pretty remarkable .532 OBP.

Sadaharu’s Skills

In my opinion, the best part about Oh’s 1974 card is his fielding. He’s rated as a 1B-5.

Just kidding!

Check out Oh’s power numbers of 1-1-1-0-0. He will hit some taters for anyone who rolls for him. Oh only had 18 doubles and no triples so the majority of his extra base hits go yard. That’s a good thing even though those pesky second column 7s may be frustrating. Oh has eight of them.

How many 14s does Sadaharu Oh’s 1974 card have? I count nine. Those include a 21-14 and a 24-14. In addition, he has a 26-22 and a 61-22 to help replicate Oh’s eight hit by pitches.

A tasty card indeed! I was teasing about the 1B-5 earlier but that’s just icing on the cake.

thanks, Steve! I think fondly of the time that we met up in your area!

I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
