Monster Card Monday: 1992 Barry Bonds

This week’s Monster Card comes from my New York friend, Dom Provisiero. It’s Barry Bonds at the relatively early age of 27.

1992 Barry Bonds

NL MVP, All-Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger

.311 with 34 homeruns

Led NL in:

  • 109 runs
  • .456 OBP
  • .624 SLG
  • 127 walks

Reggie’s cousin already had one MVP under his belt and by the time the 1992 season was over, he would have another. This would also be the last year that Sledgehammer would play for the Pirates.

He would then sign on with the Giants and play for them for them for the balance of his career.

But what a year, Statman had for the Bucs in 1992!

Batting .311 with 34 homers, he led the league with 109 runs scored and a .456 OBP. He also paced the NL in walks (127) and slugging (.624). The year 1992 would also be the first that he would lead the league in intentional base on balls (with 32).

In 1992, Bobby’s son would be awarded the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award and be named to the NL All-Star team.

A look at Bonds’ 1992 card

It’s safe to say that Barry Bonds’ 1992 card doesn’t have any weaknesses. And there is a lot going for it. It has speed, power, on-base potential and even defense.

Bonds has five power numbers which sort of the holy grail in the modern era. He sports power numbers 1-1-0-0-0. However, if you do get into the extras, there isn’t much chance of hitting a homerun with no ones only a 22-4.

I mentioned Bonds’ speed and with his 39 steals, he was awarded a 15-11 and 25-10 along with a 45-14*. He also has seven 11s in the second column. Speaking of 14s, Bonds has six of them compared to only three 13s.

The overlooked details

  • Bonds is a OF-3 and rated Fast.
  • There is only one 31 on Bonds’ card and he received a 63-32.
  • Bonds grounded into nine DPs and as a result, received a 41-28.
  • Bonds’ five HBP were enough to grant him a 53-15.

Finally, there is an interesting video you may want to check out of Bonds and other famous non-NBA athletes (Griffey Jr. too!) participating in a slam dunk contest that happened in 1992. Crazy stuff!

Thanks, Dom!
