Monster Card Monday: 2021 Ozzie Albies

Maybe this is penance for losing to the Colona Upperdeckers two weekends ago. Albies is their second baseman and helped them defeat my Twin City Thunderchickens five games to one.

Nevertheless, Albies’ 2021 card is worth a look.

In 2021, Ozzie hit .310 with Atlanta while displaying some good power. He hit 40 doubles and 30 homers (plus seven triples!). He hit the century mark in both runs (103) and rbis (106). Add to that, he stole 20 bases.

And don’t get me started with Albies’ defense at second base!

First, it’s always nice to have a middle infielder with these power numbers. Ozzie comes with 1-4-5-6. That’s a clutch hitting card!

While Ozzie Albies’ batting average isn’t sky-high at .259, his APBA card works out pretty well. He eked out two 14s and he has a 15-11. Along with his four power numbers, he’ll do okay in that department.

No 24s for speedy Ozzie. He received a 41-28. Not only that, he received a 12-29! Albies grounded into a double play four times in 686 PA. So far in his career, he has 23 GIDP in 2739 plate appearances.

He also has two 31s. My biggest knock on this card though is his 35-13 given to him because of his lack of 14s. Had he been due for another 14, that 14 would have been moved down to 26 or 46, in my opinion.

Of course, who doesn’t like a 2B-9 in their lineup? In our Illowa APBA League, that carries extra weight. Normally, play result 53-20 is an E-4 no matter the fielding. One of the few modifications the IAL has is this:

With the “Bases Empty” the play result of “18” is changed to ground out if the shortstop is rated a “10”.  With the “Bases Empty” the play result “20” is changed to ground out if the second baseman is rated a “9”.  With the “Bases Empty” the play result “19” is changed to ground out if the third baseman is rated “6”.

One last interesting tidbit about this card: Albies has three 30s on this card. He has a 21-30, a 61-30 and of course, a 14-30. That’s worth a sac fly or two.

Overall, a great card that I would love to have in my lineup every day!
