Monster Card Monday: 2023 Ronald Acuña Jr.

Yeah, I’ve been waiting for this for a while. Now that the 2023 season is available on APBA GO now, we can gaze upon the glory that is Ronald Acuña Jr.

Ronald Acuña Jr.

NL MVP and All-Star

.337/.416/.596

41 HR/73 SB

There’s no denying that Acuña had a historic season for the Braves this season. No other player in baseball history has hit 40 homers and stole 70 bases in the same season. With a stat line of .337/.416/.596, NL MVP Acuña led the NL with 149 runs, 217 hits, 73 steals, and 383 total bases.

Ronald hit 41 dingers with 35 doubles and four triples. No doubt, he was a force and he helped Atlanta to the postseason.

A look at the NL MVP’s card

There’s a lot to unpack here so let’s start with the power numbers. Acuña has 1-1-4-6. That might seem a bit light but consider that he led the NL with 735 plate appearances and 643 at-bats. He’ll probably get those 41 homers in that playing time.

As far as steal numbers, Acuña has 11-11-10 plus two 14*s. I’m hoping that will be enough for his 73 steals. I don’t know if I have ever seen a 64-14* before.

When it comes to other hit numbers, he has the standard 8-8-8-9-9 combination. These days, three eights seems to the exception rather than the rule. Acuña will need them to maintain his .337 batting average.

I was surprised to see that Acuña grounded into 15 double plays this year. He’ll pay the price with two 24s. Not horrible but not what I expected.

For a slugger in this era, Acuña manages to look over his pitches pretty well. He only struck out 84 times giving him only three 13s. That’s practically unheard of in the 2020s if you’re not Luis Arraez. Acuña ranked 6th in MLB with 7.7 AB/SO. He also has three 14s including the two 14*.

Misc Acuña

  • Acuña is fast (duh) and is rated as an OF-3.
  • For his nine hit by pitches, Ronald Acuña Jr. receives a 62-22 plus a 15 at 53.
  • League Acuña owners will like his J-0 rating based on his 159 games.

FYI, Acuña is still hitting in the Winter Leagues…

What did I miss?? Any Acuña owners out there that can’t wait to play this card?

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. I have Acuna and Corbin Carroll. Can’t wait to have them bat back-to-back!
