Monster Card Monday: mid-2023 Ronald Acuna Jr.

Last week, we took a look at Shohei Ohtani’s mid-2023 card thanks to Steve’s APBA Card Computer. A fine card that was! Shohei really is in a class of his own. If it weren’t for him, I would have said, this week’s featured card was untouchable.

This week, we’re looking at Ronald Acuna and his progress so far in the 2023 season. Acuna has always been top notch since he came up and it looks like he’s continuing his climb to success.

unofficial midseason card of Ronald Acuna

A combination of strength and speed, he currently leads the National League in slugging (.589) AND stolen bases (41). Through 88 games in the season in which Acuna has played every one, he has a total of 209 total bases and could possibly reach the elusive 400 mark.

Not surprisingly, Ronald Acuna Jr. is on target to receive four power numbers and four speed numbers. If he keeps this up, I don’t know of many players who have received this kind of excellence on both spectrums.

His power numbers are strong especially with runners on base. At 1-5-5-6, he will be a very clutch hitter.

If you’re league team is very strong, Acuna could even make a viable leadoff hitter. He has three 11s and a 10. More importantly, he has 12 on base chances against a A pitcher. Yes, he has two 5s but I have seen this in league play on more than a few occasions. Crazy, I know.

The big question is whether Acuna can keep this up. If so, Acuna owners are in for a good time.

That’s interesting because when I saw this card I was reminded of this Joe Morgan APBA card.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
