Weird Card Wednesday: 1901 Davy Jones

Jim Fraasch from Jim’s APBA Barn, submitted this card for Weird Card for Wednesday. It’s 1901 Davy Jones.

Jones had a pretty distinguished career spanning 18 years. His first season in 1901 with the Milwaukee Brewers (no, not those Brewers) was pretty insignificant in that he played in only 14 games. That said, he made his mark in those few games.

In 52 at-bats, three of his nine hits were for homers (no doubles or triples). He also walked eleven times and stole four bases.

Alas, he still only hit .173 for the year. Add a few 13s and this 1901 Jones card would look like a typical #3 hitter in 2019.

Davy Jones has two ones! Unfortunately, it drops dramatically to a 33-8 after that. He does contribute with six 14s, three with *s.

Note that this card has a 21-19 and a 53-17. APBA card makers typically give two error result numbers to deadball players.

thanks, Jim!!

As I finish this, I notice that I wrote this five years ago. Still posting this.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. What a great find, from 1901 no less! I would have sworn that was one of Keon Broxton’s cards when I first glanced it.

  2. Yawn! Another low AB fluke card.
