Cano goes first in OAPBA 2014 draft

The Orlando APBA Association is the first league to report in 2014 draft results.  Here’s OAPBA manager Rod Caborn’s wrap-up on their draft:

The Orlando APBA Association (OAPBA) held its 27th draft on Saturday, Feb. 1. The league has contracted to seven teams for 2014, with Joe Passiatore’s defending champion Platoon (six straight league titles and Kris Stenger’s Gang dropping out for 2014. Both managers jobs and home duties were pressing and they would not be able to compete in the 2015 season.

The league will play a 79-game unbalanced schedule in the upcoming season.

First to go in the draft was former Platoon 2b Robinson Cano, picked by Dave Mitchell’s Piranhas, the third straight #1 pick by the Piranhas in the past three seasons. RHP Jose Fernandez went second, selected by Jonathan Stilwell’s Otters. Steven Korb’s Turfbeaters grabbed another Platoon dispersal player, C Yadier Molina, third.

Here are the results of OAPBA’s entire 2014 draft in pdf form.

Rod also passed on the OAPBA Rhubarb which is their annual draft report.  Prepared by OAPBA’s Dave Larsen, it has a humorous almost irreverent tone to it.  It’s a great read and for league members out there, it might give you some ideas on how to document the history of your league.

Thanks for the update, Rod.  Good luck to the OAPBA managers in 2014!

  1. What is a platoon dispersal player?

    • The name of the Team that disbanded was called the Platoon. 7 of the first 14 players chosen in this years draft were on the Platoon last season. I was able to pick up Darvish and then Adam Jones in my next pick.
