Dave Larson’s Taz Devils win OAPBA championship!

APBA Blog contributor Rod Caborn writes in with a press release from the Orlando APBA Association. OAPBA has concluded its 32nd season and announces Dave Larson as their 2019 champion!

Going from worst to first, Dave Larson’s Taz Devils won their second championship in three years and seventh in OAPBA’s history. This year, they did it with a 54-26 record and claimed both the league MVP and Cy Young.

Mookie Betts took the MVP award batting .349 with 14 homers, 47 rbis and 27 stolen bases in OAPBA’s 80-game season. Gerritt Cole won the Cy Young honors with an undefeated 9-0 season and a 2.26 ERA.

According to Rod, Dave Larson is the winningest manager in OAPBA’s history. He has an amazing 1,146-962 record in regular season play. On top of that he is 48-36 in the postseason.

You can read the 2019 OAPBA Yearbook here. As always, it is a great production by Rod Caborn and the rest of the OAPBA crew.

Nice work, Mr. Larson!! Congratulations!!

PS what’s this?

Rod Caborn’s Beefers (33-47) set a team record for the lowest batting average in the team’s history, .191, along with a league-worst .284 OBP.

Rod’s got some ‘splaining to do! :)

  1. Yeah, Rod… Explain how your team won 33 games! :-)

I’m still scratching my head trying to figure out how I assembled the Team That Could Not Hit or Win.

Lorenzo Cain 12-92, .130, Javier Baez .171, .200 OBP, Matt Olson .187, .288 OBP, Willson Contreras, .141 and backup Yan Gomes, .158. Brandon Nimmo was the star of my team, .252, 424 OB, but was like someone on a desert island…totally stranded.

On the mound, Cory Kluber 3-7, 3.65, Max Scherzer 6-5 3.86. My ace was Kyle Hendricks (my #4 starter, a 10 righty) 8-7, 4.43.

They looked great on paper (before the season). Not so great when it was all added up.

Wait’ll next year! And it’s just around the corner.
