Illowa fun set for this weekend

This Friday, the Illowa APBA League continues its 50th season by converging on the Chicago-area for its annual June weekend. We’ll roll dem bones and get some APBA played.

As you can see, the race remains tight. After 48 games, five teams remain within two games while there is a father-son tie for first place. Mike Bunch’s Bombers and Marcus Bunch’s Upperdeckers have a slim lead over the rest of the league.

As for my Twin City Thunderchickens, we got off to a promising start during the draft weekend going 15-15. Unfortunately, we tripped over Don Smith’s Molly Putts Marauders 2-7 which set us down in the standings.

Still, we’re only five games back.

We’re hitting (the team is fourth out of ten in batting average) but pitching is yet our downfall with a 4.86 ERA. The Thunderchickens have speed this year. We lead the IAL with 46 stolen bases. Interesting fact: Elly de la Cruz only has one steal albeit in just 49 at bats. He’ll get more time this weekend in order to rest Manny Machado.

The boys of IAL will be arriving Friday morning. First up for me is Nick Tegeler (yes, this guy) and his Wisconsin Wall-bangers.

Stay tuned for an update!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
