There are two APBA baseball drafts I keep an eye on each year. One is the Transcontinental Baseball League which had its draft a couple weekends ago. The other is the Roberto Clemente Memorial Baseball Association (RCMBA). Because of our similar drafting rules, both are good indicators of how the Illowa APBA League rookie draft will go.
John Briggs of the RCMBA filled me on how their draft went. Not surprisingly, the draft was pretty close to the TBL’s (with one obvious exception). Like the TBL, Ronald Acuna and Juan Soto went in the first two picks.
John says:
We held our draft Jan 25th with 12 of our 15 in person and the other 3 on-line. We only allow players to be drafted if they have an APBA card.
- Ronald Acuna
- Juan Soto
- Max Scherzer (fluke circumstance put him in draft)
- Gleyber Torres
- Walker Buehler
- Shohei Ohtani
- Max Muncy
- Miguel Andujar
- David Peralta
- Miles Mikolas
We drafted 165 players in a little over three hours. If you wish to see the entire draft it’s here.
So excluding the Scherzer anomaly, the TBL and the RCMBA picked the same five top players in their rookie draft. The ONLY difference was order of the top two positions.
Thanks for the report, John! Good luck to all of the managers in the RCMBA in 2019!
How did Max Scherzer and David Peralta end up as draft choices?
It’s a free agent draft. Most likely, they were thrown in before the draft. At least that is how some other leagues work.
Check out A starter Wade Miley going in the 2nd round, albeit limited…
Tom
Both were overused the previous season and our rule on overuse is…. he becomes a free agent
