Currie chimes in with a Negro League APBA summary: Smokey Joe Williams allows just one hit!

I couldn’t pass up the chance to post this write-up by Jim Currie who always has a fantastically creative way of writing up his summary of this one-hitter Smokey Joe Williams of the (Negro League) Lincoln Giants.  Jim’s style is fun to read and I believe I learned some new words!

Thanks, Jim!  I admit ignorance when it comes to Smokey Joe Williams so I looked him up.  He’s a Hall of Fame pitcher who played in the early days of the Negro Leagues.  He played from 1910-1932.  Even Ty Cobb had good things to say about Smokey Joe saying he was a “sure 30-game winner in the major leagues”.

Baseball Reference lists Williams with 70 career wins which is pretty formidable considering that all stats are not accounted.

thanks again, Jim!

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  3. Does anyone know why GTOP are banned from the APBA convention Baseball tournament? They only allow teams from single-season card sets. Aren’t they virtually identical?
    Thanks

    • Hi Martin!
I really can’t answer that Q..Tom,d’you know the answer..?.. Say Martin…Didja try at the APBA site?..Have a great day!…Sorry I can’t give you an answer.
      Rollin’ regards,
      Jim

      • Hi Jim, interesting Negro League riff. The Negro League KNLBA franchise cards are powerful, including Smokey Joe Williams, who pitches like Bob Gibson and hits like
        Willie McCovey.
I read the APBA tournament rules page and didn’t get the ban. Suppose i wanted to enter the GTOP 1912 New York Giants for the Atlanta convention tournament. The 1912 Giants from the !912 season card set would qualify, but not the GTOP’s. I checked Zach’s Handbook who lists some changes but they hardly confer an advantage
        Thanks for the reply,
        MG
