Mel M. follows up with a 1967 NL replay summary

clete_boyer_autographA couple days ago, I posted a summary of a 1967 American League replay in progress that Mel M. is doing.  Turns out, he’s also replaying the NL as well.  He forwarded the details of that plus a little summary.

The Giants and Braves are off to a good start for Mel. It seems pitching is key for San Francisco as they have the top two in ERA (Sadecki and McCormick).  The surprising Braves are being helped out by thirdbaseman Clete Boyer who’s leading the league in homers (14) and rbis (45).

The NL has a ton of great hitters and super stars, but there’s also been  great pitching.  Marichal of the Giants pitched a 13 inning two hit shutout, giving up a hit in the first, then pitched 11 no-hit innings and gave up a hit in the 13th.  Veale of the Pirates has two 1-hitters.  On opening day he 1 hit the Mets, Harrelson doubled leading off the 7th.  Veale walked 8 and strikeout 6.  His other 1-hitter came against the Braves on 5/21, he walked 7 and struck out 12, Hank Aaron beat out an infield hit with two out in the 8th.  Gaylord Perry 1-hit the Astros on 5/21 at Houston, the only blemish came with two out in the 3rd when opposing pitcher Dave Giusti homered.
I’m not using exact lineups, but am playing the games realistically.  If injuries happen or don’t, players will be used as they would be in real life.  I hope Tony Conigliaro, Frank Robinson, Leo (Chico) Cardenas stay away from injuries that limited their playing time in the real world.  I’ve also swung a couple of trades so far and a few more may be in the works.  The Braves traded F. Alou and F. Millan to the dodgers for W. Parker and R. Hunt, so far it’s been a great trade for both teams.  Also Houston acquired P. Ward from the White Sox for N. Miller, neither player was doing anything for their team, but are doing well since the trade.

Happy New Year to all,

Mel M.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. Someday, I will share “The Ray Sadecki Theory.”

  2. Don Kessinger with 5 hits in a game?

Can I buy your dice? ;-)

  3. Mel, thanks for sharing the replay results. Many years ago I played a few months of the 67 NL and found that the pennant race was much closer in APBA than in real life. The Braves and Phillies in particular perform much better.

    • I got the game in 1968, so ’67 was my first season. My cousin and I played all through our high school years. Never finished the season, we moved on to ’69 and ’70. To bad, those cards are long gone.
