Mel M writes in with a report of a no-hitter in his 1967 replay… for the second time.
Phil Ortega of the Washington Senators hurled a no-hitter today against the New York Yankees.
Ortega walked two batters and one Yankee was safe on an error by shortstop Eddie Brinkman in the ninth. With two out in the 9th Mickey Mantle came to the plate and grounded one to second baseman Tim Cullen who flipped the ball to Brinkman at 2nd for the final out. The no hitter was the first for Ortega who walked two and struck out 3. This was the second time this year that the Yankees were no hit, Earl Wilson of the Tigers shut them down on June 4th.
6/14/67. First game of a double header.
Taking a look at the stats from 1967, I see that the Yanks hit .214 which was dead last in the AL. So I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising.
thanks for the report, Mel!
hey Mel, what is Ortega, a B?
Ortega is a B, MG 12. The score was 4-0, catcher Paul Casanova doubled in a run and hit a 2 run homer.
The Yankees are hitting about 30 points higher than their real life average, they drew a lot of walks.
This was the 4th no hitter, all within 3 weeks on the schedule.
May 25-F Jenkins
June. 1-J Lonborg
June. 4-E Wilson
June 14-P Ortega
Nicely done Mel,
I have had stretches like this as well this year. How does the pitching for this season rate as far as grades look?
Thanks Scott. The AL starters average 8.5 for the top five stater on each team, they average 9 for the NL.
The NL is way ahead in batting average though.
One other note from Ortegas no-hitter. In the top of the 5th Tresh led off with a walk, as the game was scoreless. Whitaker squared around to bunt, dice roll 66, at least the sac bunt was successful. Always a little luck involved.
