In another testament to how prevalent regional APBA tournaments have become, there were two major ones that took place on the same day once again.
Prairieland IV
David Kagel (top left) won the Prairieland IV APBA Baseball Tournament in Springfield, Illinois. He won it with a hybrid of the 1999 Athletics infield, 1964 Giants outfield and 1999 pitching staff.
David faced off against Mike Genovese in the Prairieland championship final.
On a personal note, this is the first Prairieland tournament that I missed. Many thanks to Eric Berg and Todd Daniels for their tireless work in making this work!
Old Dominion
Also on Saturday, Jim Saska hosted the Old Dominion APBA Baseball tournament in Richmond Virginia. Jim (a Cub fan) dedicated the tourney in memory of former MLB pitcher Scott Sanderson who passed away a couple before the tournament.
Jim said,
Coincidentally, I had planned on managing the 1984 Cubs in the tournament (Scott was a key member of the starting pitching staff on that team) well in advance of today.
Here’s the final results for the Old Dominion APBA Baseball Tournament. We had a great group of guys, seven in all:
- 1971 Pirates 5 wins, 1 loss
- 1977 Yankees 5 wins, 1 loss
- 1986 Red Sox 4 wins, 2 loss
- 1977 Phillies 3 wins, 3 loss
- 1983 Orioles 2 wins, 4 loss
- 1984 Cubs 2 wins, 4 loss
- 1986 Mets 0 wins, 6 loss
Tim Rounds came out the winner of the Old Dominion tourney with the 1971 Pirates!!
Congratulations to both Tim and David!! Great job to organizers Jim, Eric and Todd!!
In other tourney news, Jim Fraasch has a good recap on Jim’s APBA Barn on the TCABT-XI tourney that took place on April 6, 2019. Great photos and writeup! Interestingly enough, the championship team was the 1972 Pirates.
I’ve never met Darrell Skogen but everything I hear makes me glad that the Championship went to him!
Congrats again to Darrell!
Thanks for including the Richmond Tournament in your fine Blog Tom!
