We now have 13 confirmed participants for the April 16th Prairieland APBA Baseball Tournament in Urbana, Illinois!  I’m excited to see some familiar faces as well as some new faces as well.

Here is the updated team roster for the tourney:

Manager Team
Dick Butler 1908 Chicago Cubs
Lew Ramey 1908 New York Giants
Tom Fulton 1911 New York Giants
Thomas Nelshoppen 1930 New York Giants
Jim Welch 1941 Boston Red Sox
Bob Eller 1948 Cleveland Indians
Eric Berg 1969 Minnesota Twins
Lance Freezeland 1977 LA Dodgers
Doug Bedell  1981 Montreal Expos
Dave Sachs 1982 Milwaukee Brewers
Joe Schall 2001 St Louis Cardinals
John Kalous 2015 Houston Astros
Dave Rueck 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates

It’s an interesting mix of teams.  We have two pairs of teams from the same year.  Dick Butler and Lew Ramey went the deadball route with the 1908 Cubs and Giants respectively.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, John Kalous and Dave Rueck can’t wait to use the newest card set.  John is using the 2015 Astros and Dave chose the 2015 Pirates.

Despite the popularity of those two years, we have a wide chronological variety of teams.  Of the thirteen teams taken, nine decades are represented.  Only the 20s, 50s and 90s are not chosen… yet.

If you are still interested in being part of the Prairieland APBA Baseball Tournament, there is still time to pick a team.  We have room for seven (maybe even more) teams.

Just pick any team with less than 100 wins (labor dispute seasons are being pro-rated so no 1994 Expos, sorry) and just let me know.  Just contact me via email or join the fun at the Prairieland Tournament Facebook event page

We all hope to see you there!!

In other tournament news, good luck to Pastor Rich Zawadzki and all the other participants of the Greater Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament.  Pastor Rich has full slate of participants who will be rolling the bones this weekend in Jackson, Michigan.  Good luck all!

Also, Jim Saska had a few cancellations for his first tourney in Greater Richmond, Virginia area a couple weekends ago.  However, it sounds like a lot of fun was had nonetheless.

Jim says:

“Played a round-robin style tournament, home and away against each of the other two teams (70 Orioles and 76 Reds).  I managed the 2015 Cubs, my first chance to play with them. Kris Bryant hit two homeruns in my first game against the Reds that Arrieta went the distance in and won 7-2.

At the end of the day, we were all tied with 2-2 records.  Both of the other managers said they had a great time and definitely want to keep this going.  So, will probably schedule another one later this year, hopefully with more people.”

I look forward to hear about future tournaments.  Remember, Jim Saska helped organize the first few Chicagoland Tournaments and there were only five participants at the very first one.  I foresee growth for the Greater Richmond Virginia Tournament, too.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
